2012 Doomsday Scenarios, What Does Science Have to Say?

Do you want to know how many apocalypses I’ve lived through over the last 33 years?  Too many to count and I’m still here.  We all are.  So I find it a little difficult to put any stock into the whole end of the world 2012 Mayan calendar thing.  First of all Mayans believed in new seasons, not ends.  Secondly, the calendar, at least the one I’ve seen on the news and everything is round.  Since when does a circle end?

But that’s beside the point, even though I feel end of the world scenarios have cried wolf one too many times (Y2K anyone?), I still feel they are interesting to discuss, especially with regards to the role that science and technology may play in them.  Please check out my article at patexia.com, Doomsday 2012 innovations: Asteroid defenses, cyborgs, the LHC and genetic experiments.

The only thing I know for sure, is that our ultimate doom will likely not come from some fantastical out of this world scenario, barring of course any major asteroids that hit the earth, but rather to our own complacency for not properly taking care of the earth.

We make the right choices, I think we will be here for thousands upon thousands of years.
